Governor Shapiro’s Do-Nothing Record Makes Him a Perfect Fit for Vice President

HARRISBURG, PA., July 18, 2024 — Amid growing speculation about President Joe Biden’s future as a candidate, political pundits, operatives, and donors are touting Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as a potential candidate for vice president under Kamala Harris on the 2024 Democratic ticket.

Charles Mitchell, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania-based Commonwealth Foundation, says Shapiro excels at the ceremonial aspect of his role, while failing to deliver his promises or any meaningful accomplishments.

His organization has launched a new ad campaign highlighting their analysis of Shapiro’s record in full-page newspaper ads running in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel during this week’s Republican National Convention. The ad will also run in the Chicago Tribune during the Democratic National Convention and The Washington Post on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

Today, Mitchell issued the following statement:

“Most vice presidents are symbolic, focused on ceremony and photo ops rather than governing. Josh Shapiro is a perfect fit for that job. He has produced a stunning lack of policy accomplishment but never missed a photo op.”

Mitchell added:

“Shapiro’s most generous campaign supporters have been liberal mega-donors from California and New York who care little about delivering for Pennsylvanians. Maybe it’s time for them to get their money’s worth by sending Shapiro to Washington D.C. —and for lawmakers who truly want to be in Harrisburg, to get back to actual governance.”

Gov. Josh Shapiro has been an ineffective leader with few legislative accomplishments, according to the Commonwealth Foundation’s new analysis. “Gov. Josh Shapiro has made ‘Get Sh*t Done,’ profanity and all, the official slogan of his administration, but when it comes to legislative accomplishments, his governing abilities have yet to live up to that motto,” notes the analysis, adding “Shapiro’s first year-and-a-half in office was the least productive of any Pennsylvania gubernatorial term in at least 50 years, while also leaving him ranked last in the nation among states with divided government.”
