A SEPTA Bailout Is as Predictable as It Is Irresponsible

Last year, we wrote about how SEPTA, which received a $153 million bailout last year—when Gov. Shapiro took federal funds intended for road and bridge repair—would be lobbying for more. “Without mandated structural reforms, SEPTA … will inevitably return next year, lobbying for another multimillion-dollar handout,” we wrote in 2024.
That’s exactly what happened: On April 9, SEPTA announced it faces a “$213 million deficit.” Threatening that “unless the governor’s proposed funding boost arrives,” the agency will have to cut services and increase fares. SEPTA’s predictability is only outdone by its mismanagement and dreadful performance.
