Why is Pennsylvania’s Largest Teacher Union Hoarding Millions of Dollars?

If I were a Pennsylvania teacher, I’d be wondering why my union, the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), keeps raising dues. Teachers now pay around $834 per year in union dues—$615 of which go to the PSEA. The rest goes to the National Education Association. The PSEA’s share has gone up by 20 percent over the last 10 years.
But why?
A closer look at the union’s finances reveals quite the financial stockpile. According to the PSEA’s latest annual federal financial report (called an “LM-2”), the union certainly isn’t struggling for cash. According to the PSEA’s LM-2, the union now possesses almost $250 million in total assets and $67 million in cash. The union has hoarded more and more money over the last five years, from $125 million in net assets in 2021 to $211 million in 2025.
