Gov. Shapiro should represent workers over powerful campaign donors

Gov. Josh Shapiro frequently touts his commitment to “real freedom.” But delivering that freedom to all Pennsylvanians depends on whether he chooses to side with major campaign donors — or work for the people.
Newly released campaign finance data reveals the extent to which government unions backed Shapiro’s campaign. According to Commonwealth Foundation analysis, during the 2021–22 election cycle, Shapiro received nearly $5.5 million in campaign contributions from government union state and national political action committees (PACs). Shapiro alone accounted for approximately 42 percent of all campaign contributions made by government union PACs.
Government unions spend big in politics. Yet, if our new governor caters to these interest groups, he will overlook the struggle for freedom facing thousands of Pennsylvania government workers.
