Gov. Shapiro’s Energy Policies Will Cost Pennsylvanians

Gov. Josh Shapiro wants you to believe that he is saving you money. “From childcare to health care to energy, we’ve been focused on cutting costs across the board,” said the governor during his recent budget address.

He’s not — especially on energy. His energy plans are on course to raise energy costs for Pennsylvanians.

Case in point: Shapiro’s ongoing push for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). This multistate compact would force a carbon tax on Pennsylvania power producers with economy-wide implications. Producers will, in turn, pass on the added cost of the tax to consumers, resulting in an estimated 30% increase in electricity costs for Pennsylvanians. RGGI will increase the potential for the early retirement of reliable power plants, making blackouts more likely in the region and lowering generation.
