Kids Didn’t Vote to be Hungry

Of all the political issues we endure, childhood hunger—I assumed—would somehow rise above the fray. But I was wrong. Somehow, feeding kids isn’t safe from the maelstrom of the American culture wars.

For several years, I have volunteered at my local food pantry. Every Monday, I hop in my Tacoma and meet up with other pickup-driving volunteers at our local grocery store, where we load about 1,000 pounds of food into our truck beds. We then convoy to the pantry to unload, weigh, and store all the food donations.

And it never seems to be enough—especially these days. Over the past few weeks, we saw a noticeable uptick in people, predominantly families with kids, waiting in line for food—twice, if not triple, our usual numbers.
