This Graduation Season, Let’s Not Forget the Students Left Behind

In a few weeks’ time, I’ll be sitting on hot metal bleachers, sweating from the sweltering June sun, watching my oldest nephew graduate from high school. Around me, thousands of parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, and family will watch adoringly as their loved ones walk the stage and pause for a picture with their long-awaited diplomas.

What I can’t help thinking about is the thousands of other students graduating — or would have been — who will end their educational journey on a bitter note, leaving behind the school that couldn’t serve them and the system that couldn’t save them.
